You should apply for a first time passport if:
- You are applying for a U.S. passport for the first time and you are over 16 years old
- Your previous U.S. passport has expired and was issued more than 15 years ago
- Your previous passport has expired and it was issued when you were under 16
- Your name has changed since your passport was issued and you do not have a legal document formally changing your name.
You should apply for a passport renewal if:
- Your expired US Passport book is not lost/stolen/damaged
- Your U.S. Passport was issued when you were 16 or older
- Your U.S. Passport was issued within the last 15 years
- Your most recent US passport was issued in the exact same name on your previous passport or if your name has changed since your passport was issued and you have a document to prove it.
You should apply for a passport replacement if:
- You have lost your US Passport Your US Passport was stolen, or Your US Passport was damaged
- For all applicants under 16 years old
- Parental consent is required
You should apply for a passport amendment if:
- Your current US Passport was issued incorrectly, and
- Your passport is in your possession, and
- Your passport was issued less than one year ago
- If your passport was issued more than one year ago, you must apply for a passport renewal
You should apply for a duplicate valid US Passport if:
- You have a valid US Passport in your possession, and you were 16 years or older when passport was issued
- You can show proof of need of second passport
